The Value of Manuka Honey

At first glance, different types of honey all look the same. But, they are incredibly different in terms of source, composition and benefits.

The Manuka honey is a type of honey that comes from New Zealand. It is produced by European bees that forage and pollinate the Manuka bush, which is aplenty in the country. However, it’s not uncommon for companies and farmers to grow these bushes.

Healing Benefits of Manuka Honey

A study by the Society of General Microbiology in 2011 revealed the Manuka honey might reduce antibiotic resistance that prevents proper wound healing. Their studies showed the honey could prevent bacteria from attaching themselves to tissues. In the process, it avoids wound infection.

In general, a lot of people value honey for its antimicrobial properties. It isn’t surprising since it produces hydrogen peroxide. Another feature that sets Manuka honey apart is its concentration of another compound called methylglyoxal (MG).

The Manuka honey also has a lower glycemic index than other forms of sugar or natural sweeteners. It just falls between 54 and 59. It is, therefore, less likely to increase blood sugar spikes than quick oats, white bread, and even watermelon or pineapple.
